Welcome! This is the other post I was talking about, when I said it can be much easier to make changes slowly. But I’m going to talk about today, is the Keystone have it. This is the fancy term for one thing we decide to change, and are actually serious about. It doesn’t have to be a huge change, just one that helps bring us around. Then that changed filters through our lifestyle and makes many other changes. I will be referencing information from an awesome book called: The Power of Habit: Why We do what We do in Life and Business.
I fully recommend buying a copy, and reading this book. It is pretty life-changing! I know you are not all convinced yet though, so I have some of the broader points for you! Hopefully it will spur you to make some changes, and maybe even buy the book so you can make even more changes!
So the basic idea, is that we all have lots of habits. If we can find one Central habit to change that is important to us, we can make that a keystone habit. Once we have made that change it gets the ball rolling. Then all the other changes start becoming easier for us, because we have had some success and we are used to doing things a little differently.
Another great point is that we are incredibly averse to trying to stop doing things. We are much better at starting new thing that ultimately end up making us stop the thing we were trying to stop in the first place…
A great example of this in the health world is, instead of thinking, “I’m going to eat less junk food… ” We can say, “I’m going to eat more fruits and veggies.”
Then, I could bring more fruits and vegetables to work (or have them out on the counter if I am staying at home). Once they are close by, and I eat a few of them when I feel hungry, I’m actually starting to crowd out the junk food… because I am full on the healthier foods!
If I tell myself I’m going to eat less junk food, then I wind up wanting it all day because I feel like I’m going to deprive myself. It becomes the central focus of my attention, and it is 1000 times harder to resist! I’m sure you all can relate! Sometimes I swore the snack machine was calling my name!
Give it a try, and let me know how you do! I would love to hear any tips you have in my comments section!
